Teachers across the UK are entering half-term with levels of stress and exhaustion at record highs. According to the latest NEU survey, a staggering 62% of teachers report feeling stressed more than 60% of the time. Three-quarters find it difficult to switch off from work even at home, and a third frequently cancel personal plans just to keep up with overwhelming workloads. Ref: National Education Union

Why Teachers Feel Burnt Out

Teaching is often described and regarded as a rewarding vocation, yet it can feel that the emotional, mental, and physical demands are relentless, with long hours, often over 51hrs each week for teachers and up to 57hrs for leaders, combined with evening and weekend work, unpaid overtime, and pressure to fill staffing gaps. Many teachers are left feeling guilty for prioritising their own wellbeing amid a culture where their jobs continue to invade every aspect of life. The impact on health and morale is profound, with some staff reporting that stress “always” affects them and even holidays fail to offer true respite. Ref: The Guardian

Half term is a vital chance to recover. By focusing on mental and physical wellbeing, teachers can build resilience, boost energy, and return ready to thrive in the classroom.

Top Tips for Teacher Wellbeing This Half Term & Beyond

With a much-needed nine-day break, teachers should focus on their wellbeing with purposeful intent. Here are five top tips:

  • Schedule Unplugged Time: Carve out at least one day to fully disconnect from work emails and planning. Recharge your mind completely by leaving electronic work devices out of sight and mind.
  • Get Moving: Exercise outside helps relieve tension and boost mood, releasing beneficial endorphins for your wellbeing. Walking, yoga, or cycling can be restorative.
  • Connect with Others: Make time for friends, family, or colleagues for positive social support.
  • Rest Properly: Prioritise sleep and downtime. Nap if you need to. Let your body recover over the break.
  • Reflect and Reframe: Use journaling or mindfulness to process stress and gain perspective, helping to reset before the new half-term.YouthShoots will be bringing staff wellbeing to the forefront as we work with Academy Trusts through our direct workshop delivery to adults that will help them to identify key self-help strategies and maintain wellbeing long-term.
