These words from the Bible remind us that humility is a much underrated and very misunderstood value. In order to succeed in life, the last thing it seems we should do is turn the other cheek, look out for those in need, and consider others better than ourselves. Surely to win we need to grab and grasp, to hold onto things and to build up our own reserves?

However, my experience over the years is that true humility is winsome and winning.

It is great to achieve; but it is lonely doing it on our own. It is fantastic to come first; but it is great to come home together.

Whilst we love to see runners edge past others to take gold, we also love to watch athletes help each other up when they fall, haul each other over the finishing line, and share victories together. Humility is authentic. It allows us to fail and to support others when they fail. It is contagious. As we show gentleness and compassion, we find others demonstrate it too.

So as we look to thrive and flourish in the coming year, let’s do it humbly, with consideration and recognition of the skills, achievements and needs of others, rather than trying to race to the top on our own..
